Yorkshire Dales
2,178 square kilometres of limestone upland, river valleys and gritstone moor in the northern Pennines, designated in 1954. The field pattern is drystone walls and field barns rather than open hill, and the limestone gives the park its pavements, caves and waterfalls. Visitor numbers run well below the Peak District and the Lake District, which is the practical argument for walking here on a bank holiday.
