Cairngorms National Park

At 4,528 square kilometres this is the largest national park in the United Kingdom, designated in 2003 and extended into Perth and Kinross in 2010. It holds five of the six highest mountains in the country, Ben Macdui among them at 1,309 metres, along with the largest continuous area of its habitat type in Britain. Around 18,000 people live inside the boundary, and most of the ground is working private estate used for deer stalking and grouse shooting, with a red deer population counted at between 35,000 and 45,000 animals. A note on the map pin: open map data offered a close but not exact match for this place, so the marker may sit slightly off. If it looks wrong, please flag this entry so it can be checked.
