South Downs National Park

The newest of the British parks, announced in March 2009 and in effect from 31 March 2010, covering chalk downland across Hampshire and both Sussexes out to the Seven Sisters cliffs. Private ownership is unusually concentrated here: nearly a fifth of the park, some 70,699 acres, belongs to eight members of the gentry, so access runs on rights of way rather than open hill. It is the national park closest to London and the most heavily populated landscape of any on this list.
