The Broads
Over sixty shallow lakes, the broads themselves, which are flooded medieval peat diggings rather than natural water, linked by the Yare, Wensum, Chet, Waveney, Thurne, Ant and Bure. The network is mostly navigable and used year-round by hire cruisers, traditional wherries, sailing boats and paddleboards, with the park stretching from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and south into Suffolk. It was granted protection equivalent to national park status in 1989 and is run by the Broads Authority rather than a national park authority.
