Café Sacher

The coffeehouse of the Hotel Sacher, opposite the State Opera, trading since 1876 on the Sachertorte that Franz Sacher devised in 1832 at the age of sixteen. The slice arrives with unsweetened whipped cream and costs about €10.90; the queue outside is as reliable as the recipe. Red and gold rooms, ceremonial service, and a long-running argument with Demel over whose torte is the original.
