Café Hawelka

Opened in 1939, came through the war intact while the streets around it did not, and has been left largely unaltered since: low ceilings, dark wood, an artists' table. The Buchteln, jam-filled yeast buns baked to Josefine Hawelka's recipe, come out from about 10pm. Oskar Werner, Ernst Fuchs and Friedensreich Hundertwasser treated the room as a second home, and Georg Danzer put it in the song 'Jö Schau'.
