Café Demel

Imperial and royal court confectioner since 1786, on the Kohlmarkt, with 19th-century interiors and a window display that functions as street theatre. The pastry kitchen works behind glass, so you can watch the torten being finished before you order one. Closes at seven, earlier than most of the coffeehouses, and claims the original Sachertorte in defiance of the hotel down the road.
