Café Central

Open since 1876 on the ground floor of Palais Ferstel, with Gothic vaulting, a Venetian-style inner courtyard and a papier-mâché Peter Altenberg by the door. Trotsky, Lenin, Freud, Stefan Zweig and Arthur Schnitzler all sat here, and the queue outside is now part of the experience. Come at opening time if you want the columned hall without the crowd, and order a melange rather than a cappuccino.
