Café Landtmann

Opened 1873 on the Ringstrasse beside the Burgtheater, and heritage-protected as a monument. Freud came regularly and recruited patients here, and the café hosted early weekly meetings of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society; Kokoschka, Thomas Mann and Mahler were among the regulars, Elfriede Jelinek among the current ones. It remains the political coffeehouse, with journalists, Burgtheater actors and a large sheltered terrace facing the city hall.
