Café Gijón

Opened on Paseo de Recoletos in 1888 by a man from Gijón, and for more than a century the standing address for Madrid's literary tertulias: Cela, Gerardo Diego and García Nieto among hundreds of others. Marino Gómez-Santos wrote its chronicle and Umbral wrote the night he arrived. A literary prize carrying the café's name is still awarded annually.
