Café Schwarzenberg

Opened 1861, the oldest survivor of the original 27 Ringstrasse cafés, with wood panelling, red leather banquettes and marble tables, and live piano at weekends. Josef Hoffmann, co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, had his chauffeur bring him here daily; Hermann Nitsch came later. In 1980 it was nearly converted into a car showroom, prevented by Helmut Zilk before he became mayor. Window seats look straight at the old town facades.
