Lake Hiawatha
Fifty-four acres and 23 feet deep, but with a watershed of 115,840 acres, two orders of magnitude larger than any other lake in the city, because Minnehaha Creek runs through it on its way to the falls. It was dredged out of marsh under Theodore Wirth, whose plan for 14 feet of depth was cut to ten when the contracts were let, and the water management problems that followed are still the subject of park board study. It was known as Mud Lake and then Rice Lake before the renaming.
