Pont des Invalides

The first attempt at a crossing here was a single-span suspension bridge begun in 1821 to a design by the engineer Claude Navier, sited where the Pont Alexandre III now stands so as to align with the Hôtel des Invalides. It was never completed as intended, and the present bridge carries the axis instead. The engineers behind it also designed the first cast iron footbridge at Solférino.
