Skeleton Gorge

The eastern approach, beginning inside Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and climbing the Afromontane forest of the gorge with scrambling over a mostly dry rocky streambed and a series of long wooden ladders where the footing is poor. Above the treeline the gradient eases into open fynbos and the route becomes the Smuts Track, passing near the Hely-Hutchinson Reservoir on the way to Maclear's Beacon. The forest gives shade almost the whole way up, which makes it the summer counterpart to Platteklip. The ladders and streambed are the reason it is not a wet-weather route.
