Platteklip Gorge

The direct line up the north face, starting from Tafelberg Road roughly a mile beyond the lower cable car station and climbing the main gorge on large natural rock steps and anti-erosion gabions. Sources give anything from 1.5 to 2.5 hours up depending on fitness; the steps are big enough that short legs feel it, and the second half is steeper than the zigzag section in the middle. There is effectively no tree cover for the whole ascent, so the north-facing gorge bakes from mid-morning in summer. Busiest route on the mountain, and the one most people descend by cableway.
