Cour du Commerce Saint-André

An 18th-century lane on the Left Bank, glazed at the north end in 1823 when covered passages came into fashion, with the middle section left open to the sky. The uneven original cobbles are still down, a rare survival of pre-Haussmann street surface, and the guillotine was built and tested here in 1792. Le Procope, one of the oldest restaurants in the city, opens onto it, along with vintage clothing shops and independent boutiques.
