Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones

Protected since 27 November 1917 and spread over some 4,500 acres of the Sierra de las Cruces, southwest of the city and well above it. The name misleads twice: nothing here is arid and there are no lions, the desierto referring to the sparsely settled ground the Carmelites chose. The colonial convent ruins are the usual destination, linked by hiking trails through conifer forest with varied wildlife.
