The Reading Rooms need a free Reader Pass, not a membership: registration asks for proof of identity and a stated reason to use the collections, and is generally granted to anyone who can show they are doing serious research. Free study spaces in the building are separate from the Reading Rooms and need no pass at all, as do the Treasures Gallery and the entrance hall displays. Sockets are plentiful in the Reading Rooms and the silence there is enforced rather than hoped for. Services are still being restored after the 2023 cyber-attack, so check which research services are running before making the trip.
