Kasatochi, 2008
The small island volcano in the central Aleutians erupted violently on 7 and 8 August after an intense period of precursory seismic activity. Just after 2 PM AKDT satellite images confirmed the eruption was under way and the Alaska Volcano Observatory issued a red aviation colour code and warning alert level. A third event sent an ash and gas rich plume to 45,000 to 50,000 feet and dropped several inches of ash and lapilli over the ocean and on islands to the southwest, with minor amounts on Adak Island about 50 miles away.
