Fukutoku-Oka-no-Ba, 2021
A large-scale eruption at the shallow submarine volcano in Japan's Izu-Bonin arc, dated to 12 or 13 August by different accounts, created two new islands and sent a volcanic column as high as 16 km into the stratosphere. Fallout of pumice lapilli from the water-rich eruption column generated a large floating pumice raft, one of few documented submarine eruptions to produce both a large aerial plume and a raft. Discoloured water was still visible over the site on 27 September.
