Ruang, 2024
Late on the night of 16 April the volcano began a series of explosive eruptions that at times sent plumes of ash and gas into the stratosphere, causing extensive damage from volcanic debris to settlements on the north side of the island and to Laingpatehi village. On Tuesday 30 April it spewed explosive flows of incandescent lava as lightning lit the crater, prompting authorities to raise the alert status to its highest level and close a nearby airport. More than 12,000 people living on a nearby island were evacuated, and most of the island's own population of more than 800 was moved out.
