Taal, 2020
A phreatomagmatic eruption from the main crater of the Batangas volcano on the afternoon of 12 January, 43 years after the previous eruption in 1977, spread ash over Calabarzon, Metro Manila and parts of Central Luzon and the Ilocos Region, suspending classes, work and flights. PHIVOLCS had advised residents of Volcano Island to evacuate at around 1 pm and raised the alert to Level 2 by 2:30 pm; stronger explosions began around 3 pm with an ash column over a kilometre high, and Alert Level 3 followed by 4 pm. The eruption temporarily dried up Taal Main Crater Lake and destroyed Vulcan Point, an island within it.
