Augustine, 1976-1977
On the morning of 22 January the Alaskan volcano entered a period of major activity from a new vent at the contact between the 1935 and 1964 domes. It was relatively quiet from 26 January to 5 February, then explosive activity resumed in April with block and ash flows shed from the new dome as it grew again. The Burr Point research station on Augustine Island was severely damaged by blast, thermal effects and ashfall.
