Mount Sutro

The summit is wooded rather than open: around 80 percent of the cover is eucalyptus planted in the late 19th century, and the older trees now run over 100 feet tall, so unlike Twin Peaks and Tank Hill nearby there is no city view from the top. A 61-acre parcel including the high point is held by UCSF as the Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve and open to the public. Two ways up: a paved road off Clarendon Avenue through the Aldea San Miguel housing, or the 355-step public stairway from Warren Drive on the 7th Avenue side. Sutro Tower is not on this hill; it stands on lower ground to the south.
