National Congress of Brazil

Designed in 1958 and occupied from 1960, the legislature reads as two twinned towers between a dome and a bowl: the dome covers the Senate, the upturned bowl the Chamber of Deputies. It anchors the eastern end of the Monumental Axis, the avenue around which Lúcio Costa laid out the whole city. Niemeyer drew it alongside the cathedral, the Alvorada, the Planalto and the Supreme Court, and the five share their structural vocabulary.
