Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida

Niemeyer designed the hyperboloid structure in 1958, but the cathedral was not dedicated until 31 May 1970, and the sixteen concrete ribs were raised long before the stained glass between them was fitted. Entry is by a descending tunnel, so the nave opens upward into light after a dark approach. The archdiocese keeps it open as a parish church rather than a monument.
