St Bride's, Fleet Street
Churches had stood on this ground for roughly a thousand years before the Fire of 1666 left it in ruins, and Wren's replacement went up between 1670 and 1684 with the tiered spire that still rises between the office blocks. Bombing in 1940 destroyed the nave completely, and the clearance that followed uncovered a seventh-century crypt beneath the floor. Long tied to the newspaper trade that occupied Fleet Street, it remains a working parish church. A note on the map pin: open map data offered a close but not exact match for this place, so the marker may sit slightly off. If it looks wrong, please flag this entry so it can be checked.
