The ground floor was built by Edwin Merry for the Ortíz Basualdo family in the late 1800s and sold around 1910 to Gath & Chávez, who ran a department store in it. The café has operated in its present form since 28 September 1954. Julio Cortázar used the room in his first novel, Los Premios, and the seat is still pointed out.
