Hurricane Hortense (1996)
It began as a tropical wave in early September and struck Guadeloupe early on 8 September with winds of 60 mph, made landfall in Puerto Rico on 9 September, and brushed the Dominican Republic shortly after. Pulling away from the Antilles it intensified rapidly, reaching maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h. Cooler water and an unfavourable atmosphere weakened it as it accelerated toward Atlantic Canada, and early on 15 September it came ashore in Nova Scotia as a minimal Category 1, bringing heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds at isolated locations. Landfall coincided with high tide, and the storm surge caused significant coastal flooding.
