Hurricane Edouard (1996)
It reached winds of 145 mph on its path, then weakened as it turned to the northeast. On 2 September it passed about 95 miles southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts as an 80 mph hurricane, its closest point of approach to the United States, producing tropical storm force winds across much of Massachusetts and one hurricane-force gust on Nantucket. In New York it raised storm tides of one to two feet, causing overwash along southern Long Island at high tide.
