Hurricane Floyd (1999)
It reached Category 4 twice, on 13 September north of Hispaniola and again on 15 September north of the Bahamas, striking the Bahamas at peak strength and causing heavy damage there. As it approached the United States, 2.6 million coastal residents of five states were ordered from their homes. It made landfall in southern North Carolina on 16 September with winds of 105 mph, and the flooding that followed pushed some rivers past 500-year levels; 51 of the fatalities were in North Carolina. Damage totalled $6.5 billion.
