Typhoon Hagupit (2014)
The JMA upgraded the system to a severe tropical storm and the JTWC to a typhoon at noon on 2 December. The Philippine government said the weather pattern was 700 kilometres wide and would affect 55 of the country's 85 provinces, and thousands sheltered in churches, schools and other evacuation centres; the JTWC meanwhile downgraded it from super typhoon status as winds eased from about 300 km/h to about 230 km/h. It weakened gradually as it crossed the Philippines in early December, with damage there put at $114 million.
