Reventador, 2002
The andesitic cone in Ecuador's Eastern Cordillera erupted after a repose of 26 years, with no visual signs of unusual activity beforehand and only seven hours of seismic tremor as precursor. By about 7:45 am the column stood 6 km above the cone and drifted southwest; the paroxysmal phase began at 09:12, sending a sustained column to 17 km and five pyroclastic flows as far as 9 km to the east. Intensity fell during the early hours of 4 November but activity continued.
