Usher Hall

Built in 1914 on money from the whisky blender Andrew Usher, who gave £100,000 towards it, and in Festival use since the first programme in 1947. Roughly 2,200 seats make it the largest classical room on the circuit, and the one the visiting orchestras get. A £40 million refurbishment completed in 2010 added the glass wing on the Lothian Road side; the Category A listed auditorium itself hosted Eurovision in 1972 and the boxing at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. The Royal Lyceum sits immediately to the south and the Traverse to the north, which makes this corner the densest stretch of the Festival map.
