The Ridgeway
The route starts in the World Heritage Site of Avebury and follows a ridge of chalk hills north-east, across the Marlborough Downs and North Wessex Downs and into the Chilterns, to reach Ivinghoe Beacon northwest of London. It keeps to high ground used since prehistoric times by travellers, herdsmen and soldiers, on a line in use for at least 5,000 years, and forms part of a longer set of tracks called the Greater Ridgeway. Much of it is bridleway, open to horse riders and cyclists, though east of Goring the bridleway and footpath diverge frequently.
