Queen Elizabeth II Bridge

Opened in 1981 by Queen Elizabeth II, this steel truss bridge carries the Tyne and Wear Metro over the river, with the line emerging from tunnel on the Newcastle side and going straight back underground beneath Gateshead. The crossing is the only stretch of daylight between the two city-centre tunnel sections.
