Gateshead Millennium Bridge

Completed in 2001 and lifted into position by floating crane, this pedestrian and cycle crossing tilts on six hydraulic rams so that shipping can pass beneath, which is where the local name Blinking Eye comes from. It took the Royal Institute of British Architects award in 2002. The deck carries a cycle lane alongside the footway.
