High Level Bridge

Robert Stephenson's bridge, built between 1846 and 1849, was the first structure to span the Tyne Gorge, and it does two jobs at once: railway above, road below. The road deck opened in 1850, and the railway companies charged tolls to use it until May 1937. It is listed Grade I, the only crossing here to hold that grade.
