Westminster Bridge
The present arch bridge opened on 24 May 1862, replacing the span of 1750 from which Wordsworth did not in fact compose his sonnet: he wrote it after crossing the river near the Houses of Parliament. In May 2026 the Catalan daily Ara reported that Westminster is one of three central London bridges added to the list of the capital's critical-condition transport infrastructure, citing a 2023 finding that £238 million a year is needed to maintain Greater London's 32 river crossings, against roughly £100 million spent in total between 2010 and 2021. Transport for London has begun work on new safety measures on the bridge.
