The Morrison Bridge

The third bridge on this alignment: a wooden swing span in 1888, a second swing bridge in 1905 not designed for cars, and the double-leaf Chicago-style bascule standing today, finished in 1958. Multnomah County calls it the largest mechanical device in Oregon, with 36-foot gears driving 940-ton counterweights on each pier and 69 feet of clearance when closed, so it rarely opens. Because the 1905 bridge stayed in service during construction, the 1958 span had to be built off-line and its west end does not meet Morrison Street.
