The Burnside Bridge

A double-leaf Strauss-type bascule opened in 1926, carrying Burnside Street across the river beneath its two Renaissance-style operator towers. It opened with six lanes of motor traffic and was redesigned in 1995 to fit bike paths; roughly 2,000 pedestrians and 4,000 cyclists cross it daily. Multnomah County owns it and notes it sits on one of the longest and busiest streets in the Portland area.
