The Hawthorne Bridge

Built in 1910 to replace the Madison Bridge, which burned in 1902, this Parker truss with a vertical-lift span is the oldest operational vertical-lift bridge in the country and the oldest road bridge in Portland. The county calls it the busiest bicycle and transit bridge in the state; a bike barometer installed in 2012 counts riders as they cross. Connections to the Eastbank Esplanade and the Springwater Corridor were added in 2001, after a $22 million upgrade in 1998.
