The Kenyan-born poet and artist Khadambi Asalache bought this rundown early nineteenth-century terrace, which had been squatted, and spent 25 years cutting hand-carved fretwork into its interiors from the basement kitchen to the top floor. The carving is fixed to the walls and doors of the house itself, which is why the National Trust admits small booked groups rather than open visitors. Ticketed, and not step-free.
