Mercado da Ribeira

Opened in 1892 on the riverside at Cais do Sodré, this was for a century the wholesale point where fish off the Tagus and produce from the countryside entered the city. The 2014 renovation split the building in two: the western half still trades fruit, vegetables, fish and flowers on market hours, the eastern half became the Time Out food hall. Go early if the intention is shopping rather than eating.
