2001 Mesa Redonda fire
A firework set off at the Mesa Redonda market district in central Lima started a fire that spread across four blocks, with civil defence staff and firefighters working to reach the hundreds of traders and members of the public inside the commercial quarter. El Comercio records that about a hundred tonnes of goods were stored there and that traders kept stocks of pyrotechnics hidden under their tables. The deaths came from the fire rather than from a single blast.
