1992 Guadalajara explosions
Residents of a working-class neighbourhood had noticed a foul smell in the air for three days before dozens of underground explosions tore through the Analco district, levelling or seriously damaging twenty square blocks and damaging 1,000 buildings. The Guadalajara Reporter records that thousands of gallons of gasoline had seeped into a major sewer line from a leaky gas duct, and that controversy over the cause of the blasts continued three decades later. Tolls differ between accounts: 206 killed in one, more than 200 in another, and more than 230 dead with close to 1,400 injured in a third.
