1984 Vila Socó pipeline fire, Cubatão
A rusty pipeline belonging to Petrobras, running beneath Vila Socó, a favela of almost 6,000 residents on the outskirts of Cubatão, burst and spilled 700,000 litres of gasoline, which caught fire. Americas Quarterly, which attributes the pipeline to Petrobras, writes that the fire made Cubatão a national symbol of the price Brazilians paid for their industrial economy.
