1998 Jesse pipeline explosion
A 16 inch petrol pipeline linking the Warri refinery to Kaduna exploded at Atiegwo, in the Idjerhe clan of Ethiope West in Delta State, southern Nigeria, with Jesse the main town in the affected area. Accounts differ on both the date and the toll: Environmental Rights Action places the explosion on Saturday 17 October and describes hundreds of villagers killed and hundreds more critically injured, while History UK gives 18 October and 700 killed. The accounts also differ on what drew people to the pipeline, one recording that local people from Jesse and nearby villages had trooped to Atiegwo that day and the other that residents commonly took oil from the line to supplement their incomes.
