1944 Bombay Docks explosion
On the afternoon of 14 April the freighter Fort Stikine, of 7,142 tons, blew apart at the eastern docks of Bombay, splitting in half and hurling steel plates, cargo and bodies hundreds of metres into the air. A seismograph at the meteorological department in Shimla, 1,700 km away, recorded the tremors. By nightfall large parts of the city were burning and thousands lay dead or injured, according to the account in Amusing Planet, in a port handling wartime cargo for British India.
