Park Güell

Eusebi Güell bought the hillside intending a gated estate of villas and had Gaudí lay out the roads, terraces and services between 1900 and 1914; only two of the dozen or so houses were ever built, and the site became a public park instead. What was completed is the infrastructure: the Escalinata del Dragón with its trencadís salamander, the Sala Hipóstila of leaning columns, and the serpentine mosaic bench that doubles as the parapet of the terrace above it. Gaudí himself lived on the estate for two decades in the Torre Rosa.
